Perimenopause, or menopause transition, occurs during the years before the onset of menopause. In this time, the ovaries gradually begin to make less estrogen. Perimenopause is marked by fluctuating estrogen levels, which can cause several symptoms such as heavy, irregular periods and cramping, migraines, and other changes to the body.
If you’re wondering whether you’re entering the phase before menopause, read on to learn the signs and more about what to expect.
When does perimenopause start?
The body typically begins perimenopause when a woman is in her 40s – but in some cases, it can occur as early as a woman’s late 30s. It can last anywhere from several months to several years – but it always ends in menopause. Menopause marks the time when the ovaries cease to release eggs.
How do I know if I’m in perimenopause?
Your hormonal levels will change during perimenopause because your ovaries are reducing the amount of estrogen in your body. Your doctor can check you for perimenopause by taking a blood test to check your hormone levels, or they may be able to diagnose it based on symptoms.
What symptoms can I expect?
Most women who experience perimenopause report some or all of the following symptoms:
- Hot flashes
- Tender breasts
- Premenstrual syndrome
- Lowered sex drive
- Irregular periods
- Heavy periods
- Vaginal dryness
- Discomfort during sex
- Urine leakage when coughing or sneezing
- Urinary urgency and increased frequency
- Mood swings
- Insomnia or trouble sleeping
The symptoms listed above are normal. If any of them become severe, talk to a doctor about treatment options.
What symptoms are considered serious?
The serious symptoms that you need to watch out for include:
- Extremely heavy periods, or periods with blood clots
- Periods that last several days longer than normal periods
- Spotting between periods
- Spotting after sex
- Your periods occurring more frequently and closer together
If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical attention.
